Poetry Happening Near You

Taking the plunge

Taking the Plunge

Last year I longed
To swim out in the sea,
Each splash and stroke
Would feel so very free
To me,
Yet it was not to be.

This year I find
Myself upon the beach
My wetsuit on
The wild waves within reach
And yet
I choose to stay upon the beach.

I'll take the plunge
Some other day
Into those choppy deep, dark  waves
And float away,
Finding my way,
But for today
I choose to stay.

About this poem

Every year, Poetry on Loan runs a poetry competition, free to enter for anyone living, working or studying in the West Midlands.

This year, the judging was very difficult, with stiff competition among the shortlisted entries. Many of the shortlisted poems are worthy of a place on the Poetry on Loan website, and Taking the plunge is one of these.

Alison lives in Coventry - quite a long way from the sea! She told us:
Although I was born and bred in Yorkshire, I came to Coventry to study English and American Literature at the University of Warwick in 1993 and have lived or worked in the city for most of the time since. I married a Coventrian (our first date was at a creative writing group at the central library) and we settled in the city and have three children. I work part time for the Civil Service. As well as writing, my spare time is spent on church and community activities, reading, going for walks with my family, fending off weeds and badgers on our allotment, and trying to grow lemons.

We'll be showing you some more of the shortlisted poems over the next few months.
