Poetry Happening Near You

Young Poet Laureate 2019

Last year it was Rebecca Lockwood; this year it's 15-year-old Lily Massey. Three judges - Rebecca Lockwood, and the Staffordshire Poet Laureate, Emily Galvin, plus Brenda Read-Brown of Poetry on Loan - put five exceptional candidates through their paces. Not only did each candidate have to read two poems, they were also asked stiff questions. In the end, though, the title of Staffordshire Young Poet Laureate 2018 went, deservedly, to Lily Massey. Good luck to Lily in her year!

National Poetry Day 2017 proved to be a very busy day in Staffordshire this year. Not only were we supporting NPD itself but we launched our Staffordshire Poetry Collection and also appointed our new Staffordshire Poet Laureate and Young Poet Laureate
Rebecca Lockwood - Staffordshire Young Poet Laureate said:
"I am delighted to have been appointed Young Poet Laureate of Staffordshire for 2017/18. I am especially excited for my year ahead, as I hope to create poetry events specifically for young people throughout Staffordshire where we can openly discuss and relate to each other in a time where things around us can appear daunting.
I love poetry and also manage a blog dedicated to my poetry rebeccalockwoodblog.wordpress.com<http://rebeccalockwoodblog.wordpress.com/> which I also hope to share with other young people.”
Emily Galvin - Staffordshire Poet Laureate said:
"I am absolutely honoured, and incredibly flattered to have been chosen as the new Staffordshire Poet Laureate.  I can't wait for the challenges and opportunities the next two years are about to bring - in particular, working with the new Young Poet Laureate as the first all-female laureateship for the county.  It's a wonderfully exciting time for poetry, and I can't wait to embrace it and help spread the word."
